How Does Acupuncture Work?

As we go about our daily lives, our bodies are constantly under stress and are undergoing self repair. Acupuncture boosts this ability to repair and is able to direct this repair mechanism to specific areas in need. The ancient Chinese doctors discovered that the secret to healing is in regulating blood flow since the blood circulates oxygen (qi), nutrients, analgesics, anti-inflammatory agents, and hormones, and provides a waste removal system. Acupuncture activates complex mechanisms in the body which involve the blood vessels, sensory nerves, immune system, tissue reactions, brain, endocrine glands, nervous systems, and the organs. The improved circulation and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the bodyʼs natural self repair abilities, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being.

At Sound Wellness and Acupuncture we mainly practice distal acupuncture or “The Balance Method”. This means that we rarely put needles in the area of pain, but rather use distal points located mostly on the arms and legs to treat any area of the body that may be affected. This is a 2000 year old method originating in the I Ching ancient text and popularized in modern times by Dr. Richard Tan. The body encompasses a complex system of connections, mostly made up of blood vessels and nerves. ThroughAcupunctureʼs meridian system, the functional organization of these connections can be utilized to direct blood flow to specific areas, relieve pain, and improve bodily functions. As Dr. Tan tells his students, “the switch is not on the light (bulb)”, which means that ideal location for treatment is not at the local area. The greatest value of this method is its ability to treat pain immediately. Most patients can expect their pain to significantly decrease or go away altogether within seconds of needle insertion. This makes acupuncture an invaluable treatment for acute and chronic pain.

If you have pain that has been treated with other modalities but still lingers, there is a very good chance that acupuncture will bring you relief.
